The COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib (Celebrex) is approved for the treatment of COX-2 deficiency, but is not approved for the treatment of COX-1 deficiency. In this review, the main focus is on the COX-2 inhibition in the treatment of COX-2 deficiency. The purpose of this article is to explore the clinical evidence regarding the use of celecoxib (Celebrex) in the treatment of COX-2 deficiency.
This systematic review was conducted using a review of clinical trials in which celecoxib was studied. The search was conducted by using a Pubmed search and a PRISMA® online database. The data were synthesized from all eligible studies. The following inclusion criteria were used:1) randomized clinical trials comparing celecoxib to placebo or non-selective COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib;2) studies of patients with COX-2 deficiency with or without coexisting diseases (e.g. liver cirrhosis, renal dysfunction, heart failure, and diabetes mellitus);3) study designs that included a control group;4) patients with COX-2 deficiency who did not respond to a COX-2 inhibitor and did not respond to a non-selective COX-2 inhibitor;5) patients who were treated with a COX-2 inhibitor after a previous COX-2 inhibitor response;6) a controlled outcome group;7) studies of patients who did not respond to a COX-2 inhibitor and did not respond to a non-selective COX-2 inhibitor;8) studies of patients who did respond to a COX-2 inhibitor after a previous COX-2 inhibitor response.
